GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) -
The No. 12/11 Green Bay (16-0, 6-0 HL) women's basketball
team will look to become the first team in program history to start a season
17-0 as it hosts Cleveland State (8-9, 3-3 HL) Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Kress
Events Center. Saturday's game is also Festival Foods Family game featuring
$3.00 youth tickets.
The Phoenix tied its best start in program history with its recent win
over Youngstown State Jan. 19, starting the season 16-0 for the second time.
Both 16-0 starts have come under fifth year head coach Matt Bollant with the
other being the 2009-10 campaign. Green Bay is currently on a 36 consecutive
regular season winning streak which is also the longest in the history of the 38-year-old
program.
Green Bay has won its last 32 regular season games against conference
opponents and a record 44 regular season contests held at the Kress Events
Center. The Phoenix will look to stop Cleveland State's hot shooting weapon in
Shalonda Winton who has scored 20 or more points in the past four games for the
Vikings, averaging 15.8 points per game. Winton is also grabbing an average of
9.6 rebounds per game.
BATTLING THE HORIZON LEAGUE... When facing Horizon League opponents, Winton leads the league in
scoring, pouring in an average of 22.8 points per game while Green Bay's Julie
Wojta (Francis Creek, Wis.) is sixth averaging 17.5 points per game. Wojta is
second on the boards with an average of 10.5 per contest while Winton is
grabbing an average of 10.2 per contest. Meanwhile Wojta remains atop the
charts with an average of 5.2 steals per game.
ABOUT THE SERIES... Green Bay owns an overall record of 49-5 against Cleveland State and is
23-3 when facing the Vikings at the Kress Events Center. While facing Cleveland
State on its home court, Green Bay has set three team Kress Events Center
records including field goals made (34), field goal percentage (.667) and
assists (27). Green Bay has won its last 32 regular season games against
conference opponents and a record 44 regular season contests held at the Kress.
NCAA RECORDS... Green Bay is no stranger to the NCAA record book. Green Bay entered this
season as the eighth winningest team (based on percentage) in Division I. With
its 16-0 start to the season, Green Bay has assured itself of its 35th
consecutive winning season which ranks third all-time behind Louisiana Tech and
Tennessee who both have 38 consecutive winning seasons.
