GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - After posting an unbeaten (4-0) record to open the spring schedule
over the weekend, Green Bay men's tennis junior Craig Cox (Surrey,
England) earned Horizon League Player of the Week honors on Tuesday for the
first time in his Phoenix career.
In
the season-opening
loss (5-2) at Western Michigan on Friday, Cox rallied for a
come-from-behind win at No. 5 singles against WMU's Ross VanderPloeg. The
Second Team All-League pick from a year ago dropped the opening set, but
recovered for a 6-7 (8), 6-2, 1-0 (10-3) victory. The junior also teamed up
with classmate Erik Finkenbrink (Duelman, Germany) for Green Bay's lone
doubles win at the No. 2 spot.
In
Green
Bay's 7-0 sweep of IPFW Saturday in Kalamazoo, Mich., Cox routed Daniel
Kang 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 5 singles match after again pairing up with
Finkenbrink for a tough, 8-7 (5) victory over the Mastadons' duo of Connor
Andrews and Roberto Cabrini at No. 1 doubles.
"I
was especially proud of Craig's come-from-behind win against Western Michigan
as well as his No. 1 doubles win against IPFW, where the last few points of the
tie-break were won on his racquet," Phoenix head coach Mark Thomas
said. "He has worked hard to develop the mental side of his game and it
really showed this weekend."
Green
Bay (1-1) opens
a three-day, three-match home stand on Friday when it hosts Michigan Tech
at 6 p.m. at Western Racquet and Fitness. The Phoenix then welcomes Bradley
(Saturday at 2 p.m.) and Carleton (Sunday at 10 a.m.) to close out the weekend.
