YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The No. 11/12 Green Bay (22-1, 12-1 HL) women's basketball wraps up its
road trip Saturday, Feb. 18 as it battles Youngstown State (10-15, 4-10 HL) at 1
p.m. CT at the Beeghly Center in Youngstown, Ohio.
Green Bay enters
Saturday's contest after scoring a season-high in its 90-59 win at Cleveland
State Thursday. Senior Julie Wojta (Francis Creek, Wis.) posted her second
consecutive double double performance with a game-high 23 points and 12
rebounds. Wojta was one of four Phoenix players to score in double figures.
The Phoenix has
won 18 consecutive regular season Horizon League games on the road, the longest
streak under fifth year head coach Matt Bollant.
Youngstown State
is coming off its fourth consecutive loss after being edged 76-71 by Milwaukee.
Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year Brandi Brown led all players with
20 points and nine rebounds while the Panthers had four players score in double
figures.
Saturday's game
features two of the top five scorers against Horzion League opponents in Wojta
and Brown. Wojta is fourth averaging 18.2 points per game while Brown is
scoring an average of 18.0 points per contest against conference foes. Both
were Preseason Horizon League First Team All-League selections.
ABOUT THE SERIES: Saturday will be the 38th meeting
between these two teams. Green Bay owns an overall record of 36-1 against the Penguins
and is 12-0 in Youngstown, Ohio.
LAST
MEETING: Bauer scored the first
five points of the game, including a three from the left corner on the opening
possession while the Penguins' defense forced Green Bay to turn the ball over
three times in the first 90 seconds. Youngstown State cut the Phoenix lead to
three twice in the first half before Wojta sparked a 12-2 run for Green Bay,
leading by as many as 16 twice in the opening half. The Penguins opened the
second half with an 8-3 run and came as close as 11 twice. Bauer was fouled on
a three-point attempt with 8:50 to play, fueling a 17-3 run for Green Bay to
close the game.
LEAGUE
LEADERS: Green Bay leads the Horizon League in nine statistical categories
against Horizon League opponents, including scoring offense (73.6 ppg), scoring
defense (52.5), scoring margin (+21.2) free throw percentage (.775), 3-point FG
percentage defense (.279), assists (17.6), turnover margin (+11.8), steals
(12.3), assist/turnover ratio (1.2).
Individually,
Wojta leads the league in steals and defensive rebounds with 4.0 picks and 6.8
boards per contest while Lydia Bauer (Lake Zurich, Ill.) is leading all players
shooting 96.3 percent from the free throw line against conference opponents.
Wojta is third in rebounding with 10.2 boards per contest, fourth in scoring,
averaging 18.2 points per game, and third in assist/turnover ratio (1.8)
against Horizon League opponents. Classmate Hannah Quilling (Eau Claire, Wis.) leads
all league players in assist/turnover ratio (2.2), dishing out 43 assists
compared to 20 turnovers.
MOVING UP: Wojta moved up to sixth on Green Bay's
all-time career record list in both scoring and rebounding with her performance
Thursday at Cleveland State. The senior captain has 27 career double double
performances and has scored at least 15 points in the last six games.
