CHICAGO (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's tennis team picked up a pair of
victories on Friday in the Windy City, defeating IUPUI 5-2 before downing host
Chicago State 7-0. The Phoenix improved to 6-1 on the year and extended its
winning streak to six matches.
In the early match against
the Jaguars, the Phoenix fell behind early by dropping the doubles point after
three tight contests. The freshman duo of Felix Goepper (Seelbach, Germany) and Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) earned Green Bay's lone doubles win, defeating
IUPUI's Joel Modesitt and Nick Volz 8-6.
The Phoenix recovered to
take five of the six singles matches in straight sets to secure the 5-2
victory. Junior Erik Finkenbrink
(Duelman, Germany) earned a win at the No. 1 spot, beating Volz 6-1, 6-3, while
Tenzer was victorious in the No. 2 match, defeating Luke Bielawski 6-1, 6-3.
In the evening contest
against Chicago State, the Phoenix dominated in both singles and doubles en
route to the 7-0 win. Green Bay took the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles contests 8-3,
followed by straight-set wins at Nos. 1 through 5 singles. Due to an incomplete
lineup, the Cougars forfeited the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches.
Tenzer won easily in the
top singles slot, earning a 6-0, 6-1 win over Chicago State's Mario Naboa.
Senior Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids,
Minn.) also picked up a convincing win at the No. 2 singles spot, beating
Julian Chavez 6-1, 6-1.
The Phoenix men return to
action on Sunday with a pair of home matches against nationally ranked Division
III opponents at Western Racquet and Fitness Club in Green Bay. The Phoenix
first welcomes 11th-ranked Chicago at noon before hosting No. 21 UW-Whitewater
at 3 p.m.
