BROWN DEER, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's and women's swimming and diving teams got off to a strong start at the 2012 Horizon League Championship Meet on Wednesday, breaking a pair of school records while turning in a number of other impressive finishes at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center.

The Phoenix women, who are eyeing their eighth straight conference crown, are in third place after day one of the four-day meet, while the men's squad is in fifth. Host Milwaukee finished the first day atop the leaderboard on both the men's and women's sides.

Wednesday was highlighted by Phoenix sophomore Kendra Rottier (Green Bay, Wis.), who raced out to an early lead in the 1000-yard freestyle and never looked back, powering her way to an individual Horizon League title. Rottier's winning time of 10:03.79 broke the Green Bay school record of 10:09.99, set by Deanna DeGrand at last year's conference meet.

Senior Daniel Pogue (Chisholm, Minn.) narrowly missed the top spot on the podium in the men's 3-meter diving competition, finishing just one point (352.20) and one place behind Cleveland State's Josh Gonzalez, who won with a score of 353.75. Pogue's total broke the 2007 3-meter record of 343.70, set by Phil Zumstein. The 16-time Horizon League Diver of the Week now owns both the 1-meter (366.15) and 3-meter school records.

Also earning a top-eight finish behind Rottier in the women's 1000 was junior Melissa Killpatrick (Elk River, Minn.), who placed sixth in 10:24.97. In the men's 1000 free, sophomore Robert Wolf (Wind Lake, Wis.) posted the fourth-fastest time in Green Bay history, finishing seventh with a career-best 9:34.54.

Phoenix junior Mitchell Spaeth (Fredonia, Wis.) also had a solid performance on the 3-meter board, placing sixth after posting a score of 283.80.

Green Bay is back in action Thursday morning with swimming preliminaries at 10:30 a.m. For more information, visit the Championship Central Page on GreenBayPhoenix.com.
