GREEN BAY,
Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The
2011-12 campaign proved to be another successful one for the Green Bay swimming
and diving programs, as a total of 13 school records were broken throughout the
course of the season, including 10 at the Horizon League Championships at the
end of February.
Leading the way in the pool for the Phoenix women was
sophomore Kendra Rottier (Green Bay,
Wis.), who ended the year with five school records and three individual
conference championships to her name. Rottier's record-breaking run began in
December at the Iowa
Hawkeye Invite when she shattered the Phoenix record in the 200-yard
butterfly, swimming a blazing time of 2:02.81 to break the seven-year-old
standard (Sarah Ciganek, 2:04.54, 2004).
At the 2012
Horizon League meet hosted by Milwaukee, Rottier snapped four more records
while dominating a trio of distance races. The sophomore finished nearly 30
seconds ahead of second place in the 1650 freestyle on the meet's final day,
racing to a record time of 16:47.23. She also won the 1000 free (10:03.70) and
500 free (4:52.88), and swam on Green Bay's record-breaking 800 free relay
squad, which placed second in 7:27.18.
On the men's side, senior diver Daniel Pogue (Chisholm, Minn.) finished his outstanding Phoenix
career with school-record scores in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. The
16-time Horizon League Diver of the Week won the 1-meter board at the
conference meet, putting up a record total of 379.15. He also placed a close
second in the 3-meter competition, setting a new Phoenix high with a score of
352.20. For his efforts, he was named Horizon League Diver of the Meet for the
second year in a row.
Pogue also posted the highest totals by a Green Bay
diver at the 2012
NCAA Zone 'D' Diving Championships in Iowa. The senior qualified for finals
on both boards, finishing with a 3-meter total of 606.15 and a 1-meter total of
580.85.
Amber Bartholomew (Alexandria, Minn.) took
home a pair of school records and a conference record at the Horizon League
meet. The senior cruised to a first-place time of 4:18.62 in the 400 IM - the fastest
finish in league history, and also earned a second-place time of 2:01.28 in the
200 IM. Both were good enough for NCAA 'B' cuts.
The final individual record was snapped by freshman Amanda Walker (Sun Prairie, Wis.), who
was named Horizon League Co-Newcomer of the Year for her stellar rookie
campaign. Walker placed third in the 200 freestyle, touching in at a record
time of 1:50.53. The freshman standout also swam the opening leg of the
record-setting 800 free relay (7:27.18), along with Rottier, Heather Bodin (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Parker Wolf (Kohler, Wis.).
Also picking up a Phoenix record was the 200 medley
relay team consisting of Matt Hollub
(Appleton, Wis.), Ryan Korslin (Wisconsin
Rapids, Wis.), Robert Miner
(Madison, Wis.) and Cole Hackney (Highlands
Ranch, Colo.), which raced to a school-record time of 1:31.71.
