INDIANAPOLIS
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay
men's tennis team split a pair of Horizon League road contests over the
weekend, beating Butler 6-1 on Sunday in Indianapolis after a tough, 4-3 loss
at league-leading Wright State on Saturday night in Springboro, Ohio.
Sunday's win over Butler gave the Phoenix its 16th
victory (16-6, 5-1 Horizon League), equaling the school record for most wins in
a season set in 2011 (16-8, 6-1).
After dropping the
doubles point on Sunday, Green Bay rattled off straight-set wins in all six
singles contests for the 6-1 victory over the Bulldogs. Juniors Erik Finkenbrink (Duelman, Germany) and
Craig Cox (Surrey, England) were
both two-time winners, with Finkenbrink beating Zach Ervin 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3
and Cox defeating Billy Weldon 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4. The two also paired up for an
8-5 win at No. 1 doubles.
Also earning singles wins
for the Phoenix on Sunday were Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) at No. 1 (6-4, 6-2), Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) at No. 2 (6-2, 7-6), Christoph Hopfe (Castrop-Rauxel,
Germany) at No. 5 (7-6, 6-2) and Michael Tebon (Excelsior, Minn.) at No. 6 (6-3, 6-0).
Saturday featured a
battle for first place in the Horizon League with both Green Bay and Wright
State entering with 4-0 records. The match turned out to be as good as
advertised, coming down to the final singles contest.
The Phoenix started off
strong by taking two of the three doubles contests to earn the match's first
point, but the Raiders bounced back to take three of the first five singles
contests to knot things up at 3-3.
With all but one singles match
completed and sole possession of first place on the line, the No. 1 bout
between Swanson and WSU's Martin Arguello went to a third set after Swanson picked
up a 7-5 win in set number two. Arguello rebounded, however, and took the tiebreaker
for a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win, propelling the Raiders to the 4-3 result.
Cox and Tenzer won their
singles contests at Wright State Saturday night, as Cox took home a 6-3, 6-3
win over Michal Lyzwa at No. 4 and Tenzer picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over
Hayden Joblin at No. 2.
The Phoenix has just one contest remaining before the 2012
Horizon League Championships (April 27-29 in Indianapolis) - a meeting with
Detroit next Saturday at 2 p.m. in Valparaiso, Ind. The match will conclude
Green Bay's five-match road trip to end the regular season.
