VALPARAISO, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's tennis team picked up its school-record 17th victory of the year on Friday afternoon, defeating Detroit 6-1 in its regular season finale in Valparaiso, Ind. The Phoenix improved to 17-6 overall and 6-1 in the Horizon League standings, securing one of the top two seeds and a first round bye in next weekend's Horizon League Championships in Indianapolis.

Juniors Erik Finkenbrink (Duelman, Germany) and Craig Cox (Surrey, England) and freshman Michael Tebon (Excelsior, Minn.) were all two-time winners against the Titans (9-14, 3-4 HL) on Friday. Finkenbrink and Cox got the match started with an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles over Detroit's combo of Mike Basha and Chris Cheung, while Tebon paired up with classmate Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) to secure the doubles point with an 8-6 win at the No. 2 spot.

In singles action, Finkenbrink dominated Detroit's Nick Tolomei with a 6-0, 6-1 trouncing at No. 3, while Cox also picked up a straight-set win at No. 4 by defeating Basha  6-3, 6-3. Tebon earned a hard-fought victory at the No. 6 spot, battling to a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over Cheung.

Also earning singles wins were seniors Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Christoph Hopfe (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany), who took the No. 1 and No. 5 matches, respectively. Swanson took down Detroit's Alex Latosinsky 7-5, 7-0 in the top slot, while Hopfe notched a 7-5, 6-3 win over David Streeter at No. 5.

Green Bay's 17th win set a new school record for victories in a single season, snapping the previous mark of 16 set one year ago.

The Phoenix now has one week to prepare for the 2012 Horizon League Championships, held April 27-29 in Indianapolis.
