HEIGHTS, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The
Green Bay men's tennis team won its fourth straight Horizon League contest on
Saturday morning, knocking off Cleveland State 5-2 at the Peak Performance
Center in Broadview Heights, Ohio. ?The
Phoenix improves to 15-5 overall and 4-0 in the conference with the victory,
while the Vikings drop to 7-10 (1-2 Horizon League).
Green Bay got off to a fast start, winning both the
No. 2 and No. 3 doubles contests to earn the doubles point. For the second
straight day, the freshman duo of Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) and Michael Tebon (Excelsior, Minn.) teamed up for a win at No. 2, defeating CSU's
Yannick Goossens and Matt Ford 8-5. Seniors Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Henning Jess (Kaltenkirchen, Germany) also earned an 8-5 win at No.
3, beating Matt Kuelker and Jorg Van Der Vloet.
In singles, Green Bay took the top four matches to
secure the 5-2 win over the four-time defending conference champions. Swanson earned
a hard-fought, three-set win at No. 1, taking down Goossens 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Junior Erik Finkenbrink (Duelman,
Germany) also won a three-setter, coming from behind to beat Ali Shabib 5-7, 6-0,
6-3.
Tenzer and junior Craig
Cox (Surrey, England) won their singles matches in straight sets on
Saturday. Tenzer downed CSU's Matt Kuelker 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot, while
Cox cruised past Van Der Vloet 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5.
Green Bay continues its five-match Horizon League road
stretch next weekend with contests at Wright State (Saturday at 2 p.m.) and
Butler (Sunday at 10 a.m.).
