DES MOINES, Iowa (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's tennis team (4-1) split a
pair of matches at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center in Des Moines, Iowa, over the
weekend, defeating UM-Kansas City 6-1 on Saturday before suffering its first
loss of 2013 at No. 43 Drake 5-2 on Sunday.
On Saturday, the
Phoenix started by winning the doubles point against UMKC, and then went on to
take five of the six singles matches. Sophomore Michael Tenzer (Neuried,
Germany) paced Green Bay with a 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1, while senior Craig Cox
(Surrey, England) picked up a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 2.
In the 5-2 loss
to Drake (4-1), the host Bulldogs opened by taking the doubles point with wins
at No. 1 and No. 2. Freshman Howard Scott (Exeter, England) and
sophomore Michael Tebon (Excelsior, Minn.) picked up Green Bay's lone
doubles victory, pulling out an 8-7 (6) win at No. 3 over Ben Mullis and Grant
Tesmer.
Tenzer earned a
hard-fought victory over a tough opponent at No. 2 singles, defeating No. 86
Alen Salibasic in a three-set thriller. Tenzer opened with a 7-6 (4) win in the
opening set before Salibasic knotted things up with a 7-6 (5) win in set number
two. Tenzer was able to bounce back in the tiebreaker, prevailing 10-6 to earn
Green Bay's first point.
Freshman Leopold
Gomez Islinger (Weiden, Germany) nabbed the second point of the day for the
Phoenix at No. 4, defeating Jean Erasmus 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (5).
After playing its
first five matches away from home, the Phoenix will return to Western Racquet
and Fitness Club on Saturday, Feb. 9, for a pair of contests. Green Bay will
host Kenyon College 2:30 p.m. and UW-Whitewater at 6 p.m.
