VALPARAISO, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men's tennis team opened Horizon League play on Friday afternoon with a 6-1 road victory against Valparaiso (9-7, 0-2) at the Valpo Tennis Complex. The Phoenix won all three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches to improve to 11-6 on the year.
The tandem of Michael Tebon (Excelsior, Minn.) and Howard Scott (Exeter, England) got the day started with a convincing 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Valpo's Chris Baum and Danny Oakes, and then Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) and Joey Leto (Downers Grove, Ill.) clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 win at No. 3. The senior duo of Erik Finkenbrink (Duelmen, Germany) and Craig Cox (Surrey, England) also earned a doubles victory in thrilling fashion, beating Eric Honert and Lucas Waak 8-7 (4) at No. 1.
A trio of freshmen clinched the match for the Phoenix by rattling off singles wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6. Scott downed the Crusaders' Michael Baiocchi 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4, Rowan Isaaks (London, England) defeated Waak 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 and Leto knocked off Daniel Etman 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6.
Tenzer and Cox also picked up singles victories on Friday, as Tenzer took down Honert 7-6 (4), 6-2 at the top spot, and Cox beat Baum 6-2, 7-6 (5) at No. 2.
The Phoenix continues its Horizon League schedule on Saturday against UIC at 2 p.m. in Chicago.
