Men's Tennis Begins 2015 Season With Victory

By: Jake Timm (@GBJakeT)

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men's tennis team began 2015 competition with a 6-1 win over visiting Cardinal Stritch on Wednesday night.

The Phoenix got wins from all six of its singles players, including No. 1 singles player Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany), who prevailed 6-2, 6-1. Tenzer is ranked No. 77 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Cardinal Stritch was able to claim a doubles point from Green Bay, but the Phoenix took control of the match from there.

“After losing a doubles point where we're favored, the guys bounced back,” said head coach Mark Thomas. “Mentally they were prepared and were positive from start to finish.”

Green Bay's No. 2 singles player, Howard Scott (Exeter, England), won 6-1, 6-2, and says this is the first step in what he hopes is an excellent season for the Phoenix.

“We're ready, we have a great team this year and great team chemistry,” Scott said. “We're very excited for the rest of the season.”

Green Bay will have a quick turnaround, travelling to Champaign, Ill. on Friday to take on Ball State and Illinois, two programs that also appeared in the NCAA tournament last season.

“I think we got the nerves off in the first match, so I think we will play better this weekend,” Thomas said. “We're playing two championship teams, so if we can compete and potentially beat them, we're going to feel really good going into the Horizon League season.”

The Phoenix begins play Friday morning at 10 against Ball State, then faces Illinois at 3 p.m.
