Men's Tennis Earns Split in Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, ILL. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men's tennis team traveled to Illinois for a double-header on Friday.

Green Bay started strong with a 5-2 win over Ball State. The Phoenix claimed five of the six singles matches to secure the victory.

Senior Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) continued his solid start to the season, defeating his opponent in No.1 singles 6-4, 6-0. Tenzer is ranked No. 77 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

After winning its first match, Green Bay took a short break and then faced off with No. 11 Illinois, a team that boasts four players ranked by the ITA and three in the top 50.

The Phoenix battled the Illini but fell 4-0. Green Bay's No. 1 doubles team of Tenzer and Howard Scott (Exeter, England) was leading 5-3 when Illinois claimed victory in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to secure the team point for the match.

Green Bay will have a week off before it travels to take on another Big Ten opponent, facing Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn. on Friday, Jan. 30. The Phoenix will return home Sunday, Feb. 1 to host UW-Whitewater at Western Racquet Club at 9 a.m.
