GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Without dropping a set on Sunday afternoon, the Green Bay men's tennis team swept UW-Whitewater 7-0 in non-conference action at Western Racquet and Fitness Center. The Phoenix improved to 3-2 against a challenging season-opening schedule.
Green Bay jumped out early for the first time this season by claiming all three doubles matches. Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) and Howard Scott (Exeter, England) won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, Michael Tebon (Excelsior, Minn.) and Florian Kraenzler (Puchheim, Germany) earned a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles, and Joey Leto (Downers Grove, Ill.) and Marius Merz (Heidelberg, Germany) took No. 3 doubles 6-2.
“It was nice to get our first doubles point of the season, and I thought the guys played well,” head coach Mark Thomas said. “I thought we played well and with great intensity against Minnesota, and some of that carried over into this match. We had some challenging matches.”
Leopold Gomez Islinger (Weiden, Germany) moved into the No. 1 singles spot with Tenzer resting, and the junior southpaw performed exceptionally well with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
“I think we all did a pretty good job today,” said Gomez-Islinger. “I was able to minimize my errors and served a lot better than I have this season, and that gave me momentum and confidence.”
Newcomers Joshua Schramm (Brunsbuttel, Germany) and Kraenzler each posted strong victories in singles play at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Schramm was challenged in the opening set before winning 7-5, 6-3. Kraenzler win his match 6-2, 6-3 in convincing fashion.
Green Bay has three matches in the upcoming week, playing non-conference matches against Western Michigan (Friday) and IPFW (Saturday) before opening Horizon League play on Sunday at Detroit.
