Women's Tennis Battles Ranked Utah State at Home

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women's tennis team (0-3) welcomed No. 66 Utah State (5-2) to the Western Racquet and Fitness Club on Thursday evening, falling to the aggies 6-1.

Utah State came out on top in all three doubles contests, but the Phoenix made things competitive in singles, forcing three tiebreakers on the night and claiming one.

“Utah State was one of the toughest teams we have on our schedule,” said head coach Sommer May. “I'm proud of the way our team stepped up and challenged a nationally ranked team. It's no surprise that Olivia battled back to win her match. She's a fighter; I see it every day in practice and every match she plays.  This was a great win for her."

Junior Stephanie Londre (Burlington, Wis.) covered the court well this evening, going back and forth against the aggies' Guensler at No. 1 singles, but Guensler collected the victory 6-4, 2-6, (10-8).

Olivia Headford was the lone Phoenix winner on the night, taking the point against Utah State's Omera 4-6, 7-6, (10-4) at No. 2 singles. Headford battled back from being down from 5-1 to Omera in the second set to claim the 7-6 set point. After knotting things up at one set each, Headford claimed the tiebreak 10-4 to give the Phoenix its first point of the season.

“It's a total team effort,” Headford said. “I had amazing support from my teammates the entire match, and that's what gave me the confidence I needed heading into the tiebreaker. Looking over at Steph (Londre) battling at No. 1 singles made me fight even harder at No. 2.”

Samm Pedersen also had a strong outing for the Phoenix despite dropping the point to Utah State's Lyall. Pedersen claimed the first set 6-4, but lost a little momentum and dropped the second set 2-6, forcing a tiebreaker. Pedersen competed hard in the tiebreak but could not match Lyall and dropped the decision 10-4.

The Phoenix women will be off from competitive action until Feb. 21, as they travel to Peoria, Ill., to take on Western Illinois and Bradley.
