GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Fresh off a convincing home victory over second-place Wright State, the Green Bay women's basketball team will head south down I-43 for a meeting with in-state rival Milwaukee on Saturday at the Klotsche Center.
Green Bay (19-4, 9-1 HL) shut down the league's highest scoring team on Thursday night at the Kress Center, winning 61-45 to push its Horizon League lead to two games. The Phoenix continues to boast the league's best defense and has rebounded nicely following its first conference loss of the season to win two-straight.
Milwaukee (8-14, 4-6 HL) will enter Saturday's game having lost three of its last four, most recently on the road at last-place Valparaiso on Thursday night. The Panthers have been led by Ashley Green, who is averaging 20.2 PPG, which ranks second in the Horizon League.
SUFFOCATING DEFENSE
Through 10 conference games this season, Green Bay is allowing a meager 52.0 PPG, which is over 10.0 PPG higher than the next highest scoring defense in the league (UIC, 63.9 PPG). The Phoenix has allowed over 100 fewer points than the next best defense and has held five HL opponents to 50 points or fewer this year. The team's season defense ranks in the top 50 nationally and has slingshot it into a virtual three-game conference lead. No conference opponent has shot over 46 percent this season against Green Bay.
LEADING AT THE HALF
Green Bay has now taken a lead into halftime in 13-straight games and has averaged a 9.2 point lead after 20 minutes during that stretch. The Phoenix is 15-2 this season when leading at the half and has won five of its last six games by double-digits.
COST THROWS
In Thursday's win over Wright State, Green Bay attempted only six free throws, making two of them. Both of those numbers are the fewest number of attempts and makes since Dec. 18, 2013, when Green Bay went 0-for-1 at the free throw line at home against Purdue.
vs MILWAUKEE
Green Bay increased its all-time advantage to 59-18 with a 63-37 at home earlier this season. The Phoenix has won 18 of its last 19 against Milwaukee and has not lost there since Feb. 13, 2006. GB is 6-1 this season when facing teams with an under-.500 record (only loss came to Oakland at home).
TOUGH TESHA
Tesha Buck registered just her second career double-double on Thursday, recording a career-high 12 rebounds and 15 points against Wright State. Buck notched her first collegiate double-double last year, against none other than Wright State at the Nutter Center. The sophomore has reached double figures in three of her last four games and has finished in double figures in 13 games this season, the second most on the team behind Mehryn Kraker (17 games).
NO. 600 IN SIGHT
Coach Borseth racked up win No. 598 of his career on Thursday night, thus leaving him two wins away from the 600th win milestone. The 28-year coaching veteran has won 20 or more games in 11 of his 12 seasons at Green Bay and with win at Milwaukee, he will have won 20-plus in 12 of 13 seasons.
20+ WINS
With a win on Saturday the Phoenix will reach 20 wins again this season, which will extend the program's streak to 16-straight seasons of 20 wins or more. The last time Green Bay didn't win 20 games was in 1998-99, which was head coach Kevin Borseth's first season on the Green Bay sidelines.
