Green Bay Sweeps Toledo in Impressive Home Performance

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Returning home to Western Racquet and Tennis Center, Green Bay (6-3) posted an impressive performance to sweep visiting Toledo 7-0 on Friday night for its third-straight win.

Green Bay opened the evening by claiming the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3. Senior Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) and junior Howard Scott (Exeter, England) won a hard-fought match 7-5 at No. 1 doubles, and senior Michael Tebon (Excelsior, Minn.) and junior Joey Leto (Downers Grove, Ill.) cruised to a 6-2 win at No. 3.

The Phoenix swept singles play, with exciting matches at No. 3 and No. 4 singles highlighting the action. At No. 3 singles, Scott split the first two sets and battled into a third-set tiebreak before winning 10-5.

Sophomore Joshua Schramm (Brunsbuttel, Germany) took his opponent at No. 4 singles into a first-set tiebreak, and won a marathon tiebreak 13-11 to take the early lead. In the second set, Schramm cruised to a 6-2 win.

At the top of the singles lineup, Tenzer won the first set in a tiebreak and claimed set two 6-4. Junior Leopold Gomez-Islinger (Weiden, Germany) breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles, Leto won in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) at No. 5 and sophomore Jorge Gonzales Soler (Madrid, Spain) won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.

“Top to bottom in singles, we played great in every spot,” head coach Mark Thomas said. “It was probably our best team, and we competed well until the very end. We absolutely have to build on this, because if we want to win the conference we have to play like this in each match.”

“Their number one and two singles players are really tough players, so we knew it would be a challenge,” Tenzer said. “Overall, it was a really good win and the whole team played really solid.”

The Phoenix will stay home and welcome DePaul to its home facility on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
