DETROIT, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men's tennis team got off to a 1-0 conference start by beating Horizon League foe Detroit 5-2 on Sunday evening.
It was the final stop of a three-match road trip that saw the Phoenix go 2-1, including a win over IPFW on Saturday.
Green Bay got off to a good start against the Titans on Sunday, claiming the doubles point with a 6-3 win by the No. 1 team of senior Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) and junior Howard Scott (Exeter, England) and a 6-1 win by the No. 3 team of senior Michael Tebon (Excelsior, Minn.) and junior Joey Leto (Downers Grove, Ill.).
Tenzer claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, while Scott battled to a win at No. 3 singles by a score of 7-5, 7-5. Newcomer Joshua Schramm (Brunsbuttel, Germany) claimed a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 5 singles, and Leto gutted out a 7-6, 6-7, 10-8 win at the No. 6 singles spot.
Green Bay improved to 5-3 as a team on the 2015 season. The Phoenix will get a break from travel and host Toledo on Friday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. at Western Racquet Club. On Sunday, Feb. 15 DePaul comes to town for a match at 10 a.m. at Western Racquet.
