Phoenix Sweeps Singles Play for 6-1 Win Over CSU

By: Jake Timm (@GBJakeT)

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay men's tennis claimed all six singles matches en route to a 6-1 victory over visiting Cleveland State on Saturday afternoon.

The Phoenix (14-7) dropped the doubles point, then responded by rattling off wins in the first set of all six singles matches.

Junior Joey Leto (Downers Grove, Ill.) got things going for Green Bay with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles. Freshman Florian Kraenzler (Puchheim, Germany) followed with a win in straight sets at No. 4 singles to give Green Bay a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Vikings (13-7) bounced back by claiming the second set in the four other singles matches, forcing the Phoenix to work for the victory.

“Cleveland has a lot of class, so every time we play them we feel like the best tennis comes out,” said Green Bay head coach Mark Thomas.

Junior Leopold Gomez Islinger (Weiden, Germany) was the first Phoenix player to end a match that went three sets. Islinger claimed set three by a score of 6-2 at No. 2 singles and gave Green Bay a 3-1 lead in the match.

The race was on between senior Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) and junior Howard Scott (Exeter, England) at that point to see who could close his match first. Tenzer cruised in set three at No. 1 singles, winning 6-0 and giving Green Bay the deciding fourth point. Scott won his match at No. 3 singles moments later and was followed by sophomore Joshua Schramm (Brunsbuttel, Germany) who won at No. 5 singles in three sets as well.

The match was the first home contest for Green Bay since Feb. 15, and Thomas was happy to be back at Western Racquet and Fitness Center.

“When you're at home, with the fan support, it makes a big difference,” Thomas said. “As the match gets extended we like our chances at home.”

The Phoenix improved to 3-0 in conference play, and will host Youngstown State Sunday morning at 10. The Penguins (7-9) entered play Saturday as the only other team undefeated in Horizon League play at 3-0.
