CHICAGO, Ill. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay men's tennis started strong and never looked back in a 5-2 win over Horizon League foe UIC on Friday afternoon.
The No. 1 doubles team of senior Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) and Florian Kraenzler (Puchheim, Germany) picked up a 6-2 win, followed by a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles from the team of junior Leopold Gomez Islinger (Weiden, Germany) and senior Michael Tebon (Excelsior, Minn.) to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead.
Tenzer was impressive at No. 1 singles, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. The Green Bay senior is currently ranked No. 110 in singles play by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, and sports a 12-5 singles record this season, all at the top spot for the Phoenix.
Islinger was equally strong at No. 2 doubles, claiming a 6-3, 6-0 victory.
Kraenzler battled in the first set at No. 4 singles, eventually winning 7-6, then clinching the point for Green Bay (12-7) with a 6-2 win in set two. The Phoenix freshman is 11-5 in singles play in his first collegiate campaign.
Junior Joey Leto (Downers Grove, Ill.) had the battle of the day at No. 6 singles. Leto fell 7-6 in set one, then bounced back to take set two 6-4. The Green Bay junior then grinded out an 11-9 win in the tiebreaker to claim the point for the Phoenix.
Green Bay improved to 2-0 in conference play in 2015. The Phoenix will head just east of Chicago to take on Valparaiso on Saturday at 2 p.m. Green Bay will face the Crusaders in its final road match of the 2015 regular season, and conclude a 10-match road trip.
The Phoenix will return to home action when it hosts Cleveland State on Saturday, April 11 and Youngstown State on Sunday, April 12 at Western Racquet and Fitness Club.
