A week after being named Co-Preseason favorites to repeat as Horizon League champions, the Green Bay men's tennis team kicked off its 2016 spring season on Thursday night against IUPUI, defeating the Jaguars 6-1 in Milwaukee.
Green Bay (1-0) received its first point of the match following a pair of doubles victories from Rowan Isaaks/Miles McDowall (W, 6-1) and Howard Scott/Joey Leto (W, 6-4).
In singles play, the Phoenix No. 1 and No. 2 slotted players, seniors Leopold Gomez Islinger and Scott, each picked up wins at 6-1, 6-2, respectively, before Green Bay clinched its first win of the season when No. 5 Leto defeated Jose Calero 6-4, 6-3.
"It was a great way to start the spring season," said head coach Daniel Bickett. "IUPUI is always a tough team, so to put up a strong result against them is a testament to the hard work our guys have been putting in."
To round out the match, No. 3 Florian Kraenzler dropped a hard-fought three-set decision, before No. 6 Isaaks and No. 4 Joshua Schramm closed out the evening with victories.
The Phoenix have now won seven consecutive regular matches dating back to March 29 last season, when it fell 4-3 to No. 29 ranked Drake in Des Moines, Iowa.
Green Bay will travel to Bloomington, Ill., next before its matchup with Illinois State on Saturday (1 p.m. start), and round out the weekend in Chicago against DePaul on Sunday (1:15 p.m. start).
