It marks the Phoenix's first loss in the regular season since losing by the same score to No. 29 ranked Drake on March 29, 2014. The Phoenix had won seven consecutive regular matches entering play.

"Today was a great match between two tough teams,” said head coach Daniel Bickett. “To have the match come down to two tiebreakers in third sets says a lot to the fight in these two teams."

Green Bay (1-1) opened doubles play with a victory after Leopold Gomez Islinger and Florian Kraenzler won 6-3; however, Illinois State claimed the final two matches 6-4, 6-3, respectively, to take a 1-0 overall lead.

In singles play, the Phoenix No. 1 and No. 2 slotted players, Gomez Islinger and Howard Scott, each won their second consecutive match at 6-2, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0, respectively, giving Green Bay a 2-1 edge.

But after the Redbirds claimed victories in the No. 5 and No. 6 slots to retake a 3-2 lead, they clinched the win after No. 3 Rodrigo Oliviera defeated Kraenzler 2-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4).

Phoenix junior Joshua Schramm closed out the afternoon with his second win of the early season in four singles.

The Green Bay men will round out its first weekend of action in Chicago tomorrow afternoon against DePaul. Matches will begin at approximately 1:15 p.m.
