"This was a great match for our guys. They fought hard and really showed great resiliency after yesterday's tough loss (to Illinois State),” said head coach Daniel Bickett. “We'll look to rest up tomorrow, and prepare for three tough matches next weekend."
The Phoenix (2-1) swept doubles three games to none after the pairing of Miles McDowall and Rowan Isaaks opened match play with a victory over Willem Feilzer and Paul John, 6-1. Green Bay picked up its first point when Leopold Gomez Islinger and Florian Kraenzler closed out a 6-3 win, while Howard Scott and Joey Leto won by the exact same score line.
In singles play, the Blue Devils knotted up the match at one apiece when No. 6 Willem Feilzer beat Isaaks, 6-3, 6-3; however, Green Bay would lengthen its advantage to 3-1 after both No. 5 Leto and No. 3 Kraenzler won their matchups. Although Scott was bested for the first time of his season at the No. 2 position, Gomez Islinger sealed the Phoenix victory by defeating Sten Leusink, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4.
For the second time in two days, Phoenix junior Joshua Schramm closed out the afternoon by earning his third win of the week at No. 4.
The Green Bay men will hit the road once again next weekend when it travels to Kalamazoo, Mich., and Toledo, Ohio, to face Western Michigan and Toledo. The Phoenix and Broncos square off on Friday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. before meeting the Rockets on Sunday, Jan. 31 at 11 a.m.
