GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men's tennis team finished off its three-day, three-city road trip on Sunday morning in Ohio, defeating the Toledo Rockets, 5-2, in a non-conference matinee.
"Great match by our guys," said head coach Daniel Bickett. "It's been a long weekend with a lot of traveling, but their focus has been there every step of the way."
The Phoenix grabbed its first doubles point of the long weekend after freshman Miles McDowall and senior Rowan Isaaks defeated Juan Carranza and Stephen Miller, 6-2, and senior Leo Gomez Islinger and sophomore Florian Kraenzler won 6-2 in the No. 1 slot. As a result, the Green Bay pairing of Howard Scott and Joey Leto did not finish.
In singles, Kraenzler picked up his second win in as many days at No. 4, 6-1, 6-3, over Toledo's Danilo Pejovic, before Gomez Islinger was bested by last year's MAC Player of the Year Stjepan Sisko. The two teams traded points after Joshua Schramm won at the three spot, 6-2, 6-1 and Stephen Miller beat Joey Leto, 6-3, 7-5.
With Green Bay leading 3-2, it received the final two wins of the day after both Scott (6-1, 0-6, 6-2) and freshman Matej Kostadinov(2-6, 6-3, 11-9) were victorious in the tie-breaker of their respective matchups to get the 5-2 win.
The Phoenix (4-2) now shifts to next Sunday, Feb. 7, when it will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for a meeting with No. 35 Drake. Green Bay fell 4-3 to the No. 29-ranked Bulldogs on March 27 last season.
