GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Returning to its home court for the second time in three days, the Green Bay men's tennis team ended with a similar result on Sunday evening as it defeated Cardinal-Stritch, 6-1, at Western Racquet & Fitness Club.
The Phoenix (6-4) began the night in the exact way it did Friday, sweeping all three doubles matches to take the point and the overall lead, 1-0.
Leo Gomez Islinger and Florian Kraenzler defeated the Wolves' No. 1 pairing, 6-3, while the Green Bay duo of Howard Scott and Joey Leto won at No. 2, 6-1, and Matej Kostadinov and Miles McDowall won at No. 3, 7-6 (5).
In singles, the Phoenix took each of the first three singles matches to clinch the match. McDowall ended first with a victory at No. 6, 6-1, 6-1, followed by Kraenzler at No. 3 (6-3, 6-4) and Charlie Ridout at No. 5, 6-0, 7-5.
With the match already decided, Gomez Islinger lost a tough tiebreak against Cardinal Stritch's No. 1 Fabio Perasso, 3-6, 6-4, 10-6, before Leto took his third set against the Wolves' Ray Weich to win at No. 4, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Green Bay men will return to the court next Saturday, March 5, as they head to Madison to take on the No. 39 ranked Wisconsin Badgers (7-1). The match will begin at 11 a.m. from Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
