Green Bay Downs Detroit, 6-1, in Conference Opener

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Returning home for the first time since Feb. 28, the Green Bay men's tennis team opened Horizon League play on Sunday afternoon, defeating Detroit, 6-1, at Western Racquet & Fitness Club.

The Phoenix earned the doubles point after the duos of Howard Scott and Joey Leto (6-2) and Miles McDowall and Matej Kostadinov (6-3) secured wins at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

In singles, Green Bay picked up each of the first four victories as Joshua Schramm won at No. 4, 6-1, 6-0, followed by Leo Gomez Islinger at No. 2 (6-3, 6-1), Leto at No. 6 (6-1, 7-5) and Charlie Ridout at No. 5 (6-3, 6-3).

With the match already decided, Titans' No. 1 Patryk Koscielski beat Scott in a tiebreak, 1-6, 6-4, 10-5. Finally, after No. 3 singles was temporarily suspended due to a roof leak, Florian Kraenzler defeated Nicolas Solarewicz, 7-6 (5), 6-2, after switching courts.

Green Bay (8-5, 1-0 HL) will return home in 13 days for a Preseason No. 1 and No. 2 showdown with Horizon League rival Valparaiso (14-5) on Sat., April 9. First serve is slated for 10 a.m.
