GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – In a battle for the top-spot in the Horizon League, the Green Bay men's tennis team (8-6, 1-1 HL) came up short against Valparaiso (16-5, 2-0 HL) on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Crusaders, 5-2, at Western Racquet & Fitness Club.
Valparaiso clinched the doubles point, 2-1, after picking up wins at No. 1 and No. 3. First, the Phoenix duo of Miles McDowall and Matej Kostadinov dropped a 6-3 result to the Crusaders' Kyle Dunn and Chad Kissell, before Charlie Emhardt and Jeffrey Schorsch downed the Phoenix's No. 1 pairing of Leo Gomez Islinger and Florian Kraenzler, 7-5. As a result, the No. 2 doubles match went unfinished tied at 5.
In singles, Green Bay tied the match at one game apiece after freshman Charlie Ridout secured a victory at No. 5, 6-3, 6-2. However, Valparaiso went on to win each of the next three singles to clinch the match. Dunn beat Joey Leto at No. 6, 6-3, 6-3, before Schorsch and Kissell also picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 3, 6-2, 6-4, and 6-3, 6-4, respectively.
With the match already decided, Gomez Islinger earned the Phoenix's second point with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Dave Bacalla at No. 2. Finally, Joshua Schramm fell in a tiebreak to Emhardt at No. 4, 6-1, 2-6, 4-10.
Green Bay has a quick turnaround as it hosts Senior Day against the UIC Flames (8-7, 1-0 HL) on Sunday. First serve from Western Racquet is scheduled for 2 p.m.
