Head coach Reed Robelot said, "This weekend was a great first step toward a strong fall dual meet season. Our swimmers are starting their season with good, aggressive racing strategies and tough back-ends to their swims. We'll look to polish up a few more details next weekend."

Diving coach Tom Stover sang his praises as well. "The divers got off to a great start to their season. We saw a lot of great dives and many things to keep working on. Michael and Bailey have begun their seasons with top performances. Not only did they win four events each, their final scores surpassed the Division 1 NCAA Zone qualifying scores. I'm also particularly proud of our women for taking first, second, third, and fourth on the three meter on Friday."

The 400 medley relays kicked off the meet on Friday, with the women's A team of freshman Alyssa Lewandowski, freshman Malynn Tarczewski, junior Alicia Hanson, and senior Stephanie Garvin taking first with a time of 3:57.83. The men's teams went 1-2-3, showing their depth with that and the fact that the C squad ended up touching out the B relay. The combination of senior Brian Borden, freshman Max Boehnlein, freshman Paul Sadergaski, and freshman Reagan Ragsdale were on the A relay, touching the wall at 3:26.81.

The 400 freestyle relays on Friday were both won by the Phoenix as well, with the group of Hanson, junior Rosalyn Stoa, freshman Anna Liu, and sophomore Claire Stuart killing the field with a time of 3:35.71. On the men's side, it was freshman Ryan Ramminger, Ragsdale, freshman Ben Redman, and junior Nick Garcia that took gold with a time of 3:09.72.

The freshmen opened up their first competition of the season in fine fashion. Boehnlein was on fire all weekend, winning all four of his individual events. On Friday, he took the 200 IM in 1:55.65 and 500 freestyle in 4:47.58, while on Saturday he won the 400 IM with a time of 4:10.38 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:13.22.

Redman took the victory in the men's 50 free Friday as the only Phoenix under 22 seconds, touching the wall at 21.50 on Friday and 21.72 for second place on Saturday. Lewandowski was the only female to crack the 1-minute barrier in the women's 100 backstroke, posting a 59.40, while Ragsdale won the 200 freestyle on the men's side on the second day, touching at 1:45.24.

Liu barely out-touched Hanson in the 50 free on Friday, with times of 24.32 and 24.45, respectively, but on Saturday, the results were switched, with Hanson posting 24.56 while Liu produced a 24.66. Later on Friday, Liu also won the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.62.

Freshman Kate Vanderhoef also had an excellent debut, claiming the 1000 in a time of 10:54.08 on Friday and winning the 200 butterfly in 2:13.31 on Saturday.

The senior class put together a strong last first race weekend as well. Senior Andy Cooper made his return after redshirting the previous year to take the 1000 in a time of 10:04.04 and the 100 breaststroke in 59.42 on Friday. Alec Rutkowski picked up a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 51.94, showing freshman Ragsdale who was boss with a win by four one-hundredths. Garvin had a good meet as well, winning the 100 freestyle on Friday with a time of 53.00 on the dot, placing first in the 200 freestyle the same day in 1:53.59, and smashing the field in the 500 freestyle on Saturday, finishing in 5:13.64, over 10 seconds faster than second place. Borden was the backstroke king this weekend, taking both the 100 and 200 with times of 52.46 and 1:54.33, respectively.

Seniors Bailey Wagner and Michael Klemm dominated both the 1 meter board and the 3 meter board on each day. On Friday, both divers had their best day, as Wagner scored 277.95 points on 1 meter and 291.90 on the 3 meter, while Klemm earned 349.20 points on the 3 meter and 339.00 on the 1 meter. On Saturday, they still held strong, with Wagner winning the 3 meter with 294.22 points and the 1 meter in 265.57, and Klemm taking the 1 meter board with 309.82 points and the 3 meter board with a score of 289.57.

The juniors and sophomores did not disappoint either. Sophomore Riley Darling had an extraordinary 200 butterfly race, posting a 1:52.18, only eight one-hundredths away from the pool record. Junior Manny Hernandez won the 500 freestyle on the second day, posting a time of 4:47.37, the fastest 500 time of the weekend. Garcia, a Horizon League Swimmer of the Week during the 2016-17 season, won the 200 freestyle on Friday in an impressive time for this early in the year, 1:43.55, as well as the 50 free on Saturday in 21.63. Stoa took the 200 freestyle on Saturday, holding off a St. Cloud swimmer to touch four one-hundredths ahead at 1:55.61.

The 200 medley relay was the opening event on Saturday, with both teams again taking the victory. Hanson, Tarczewski, Stuart, and Liu posted a time of 1:50.19 for the women, while sophomore Ricky Davis came back strong from last year's surgery to lead off the men's relay. Davis teamed up with sophomore Garrett Spencer, Sadergaski, and Redman to put up a final time of 1:34.80.

The 200 freestyle relay concluded the two-day meet, and the Phoenix delivered again for its final races of the weekend. Hanson picked up another relay win, teaming up with Liu, Stoa, and Garvin to post a time of 1:37.95. For the men, Ragsdale, Redman, Sadergaski, and Garcia touched the wall at 1:25.42, all of them individually under 22 seconds.

The Phoenix will race again at home next Saturday, October 14th, in a tri-meet against Valparaiso and the University of Illinois – Chicago.
