GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – After spending over a month on the road to kick-off its 2017 season, the Green Bay men's tennis team made its first appearance at home on Friday evening, sweeping UW-Whitewater 7-0 at Western Racquet & Fitness Club.
The Phoenix was victorious in the night's three opening doubles matches to take the point and the overall lead, 1-0. Sophomores Matej Kostadinov and Miles McDowall defeated the Warhawks' No. 1 pairing, 6-1, while the Green Bay duo of Senior Joshua Schramm and Freshman Ivan Radomirovic secured the doubles point with a 6-3 victory at No.3.
After doubles, the Phoenix kept the momentum going by dominating all first sets on all six courts. Sophomore Kostadinov was the first Phoenix to finish the match at No. 2 singles by not dropping a single game, beating his opponent 6-0/6-0.
Sophomore Charlie Ridout secured the next point and giving the Phoenix a 3-0 advantage after winning his No.5 singles 6-1/6-3. Shortly after, Freshman Radomirovic clinched the victory for the Phoenix after downing his opponent at No.6 (6-1/6-2).
With three remaining pairings on court, the Phoenix finished off the match strong ensuring all six singles points. Sophomore McDowall made it 5-0 by winning his match at No. 4 6-0/6-2, Junior Florian Kraenzler scored another point for the Phoenix after a 6-2/6-4 victory at No.1, and Senior Schramm finished off the night with a 6-1/6-3 win at No.3 to make it 7-0 for the Phoenix.
Green Bay will have a short turnaround as it prepares for its next match against Cardinal Stritch on Saturday. First serve is slated for 4 p.m. from Western Racquet & Fitness Club.
