GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay bounced back with a convincing 7-0 win over Cleveland State on Sunday afternoon at Western Racquet & Fitness Club on Senior Day, earning the No. 3 seed in this weekend's Horizon League Tournament in Ann Arbor.
The Phoenix (8-9, 5-2 HL) found itself in an early hole after the Vikings picked up the first doubles match with a 6-3 win at No. 3. However, the Phoenix came back winning No. 1, as the Green Bay duo of Florian Kraenzler and Miles McDowall won. Now all eyes were on the No. 2 doubles match up. The Phoenix came out on top by a gutsy 7-6(7) win by lone senior Joshua Schramm and Matej Kostadinov. This gave the Phoenix only their second doubles point in the HL season.
The Phoenix seniors got the last laugh in singles; Matej Kostadinov gave the Phoenix a commanding 2-0 lead, winning in straight sets at No. 2, 6-3, 6-2. Moments later, Miles McDowall improved Green Bay's lead after the sophomore won 6-4,7-5 at No. 4 singles.
It was freshman Ivan Radomirovic, who crowned his recent performance staying unbeaten in HL play. The freshman clinched the victory at No. 6 singles, 6-2,6-4. Kraenzler followed suit less than two minutes later with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 1, improving his HL record to 5-2.
With the match being clinched, Green Bay took the last two remaining matches, as well. Sophomore Charlie Ridout gave the Phoenix a 6-0 lead after winning 7-5,6-2 at No. 5 singles.
Last match on court was senior Joshua Schramm, playing his last ever home match for the Phoenix. Schramm topped off his successful career at Green Bay winning 7-6,6-4 at No.3 singles.
No. 3 seed Green Bay heads to the conference tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich., this coming weekend, with its first match coming on Friday morning at 10 a.m. CT/11 a.m. ET against No. 6 seed Cleveland State. The Phoenix finished in a 3-way tie for second place at 5-2 in league play, and after applying the league's tiebreaking procedures, gets the No. 3 seed behind Detroit Mercy at No. 2 and Youngstown State at No. 4.
Valparaiso will be the No. 1 seed after going 7-0 in league play and capturing the regular season title.
