ANN ARBOR, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The No. 3-seeded Green Bay men's tennis team was upset by No. 6 seed Cleveland State on Friday morning in the First Round of the Horizon League Championships, falling 4-3 at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Phoenix finishes the season with an 8-10 overall record and registered yet another top half finish in the Horizon League after going 5-2 and tying for second place.
Having defeated the Vikings 7-0 on Sunday in Green Bay indoors, the Phoenix was unable to do the same on the outdoor courts on the campus of the University of Michigan. It's the first time the team was unable to make it past the first round since the 2010 season, having won three championships since then.
Green Bay opened with the doubles point victory, winning at No. 2 and No. 3 with a pair of 6-2 wins to take an early 1-0 lead. Miles McDowall made quick work to win at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-3 and give the Phoenix a 2-0 advantage, but Cleveland State would win the next three points to go up 3-2 in the match.
Charlie Ridout would pick up a win at No. 5 singles with a pair of 6-4 victories, but Joshua Schramm fell at No. 3 singles 7-5, 6-4 giving the Vikings the victory and a trip to the semifinals tomorrow morning.
Horizon League First Team honoree Florian Kraenzler fell 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 singles to Freshman of the Year Nico Mostardi. Matej Kostadinov (4-6, 5-7) and Ivan Radomirovic (3-6, 4-6) were unable to pick up wins as well.
Head coach Tim Dean and the Phoenix will graduate Schramm, who played at No. 3 singles, but the team returns the rest of its lineup for the 2017-18 season, including its No. 1 player Kraenzler.
