GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Green Bay men's tennis team served up its 2018 season-opener on Sunday afternoon, but came up short at Western Racquet by a 5-2 decision to visiting DePaul. Florian Kraenzler and James Ling picked up victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but the Blue Demons (3-1) took advantage of their experience having already played three matches this season.
"It was a great match today. DePaul showed they had played more matches throughout today, but our guys fought hard," said head coach Tim Dean. "It's mentally challenging to play so many tiebreakers and third sets in the first match of the season. DePaul won the big duece points when they needed to and that was the difference. We will learn a lot from a close match like this and we will only benefit in future matches from today's decision. Overall, I'm happy with the way our team played and started the season."
DePaul took the doubles point, rallying to win at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles after Kraenzler and Ling earned the doubles win at No. 1.
Following Ling's win at No. 2 singles, the two teams were tied at 1-1. The Blue Demons then won the next four points, three of which came in third set tiebreakers. Kraenzler won at No. 1 singles to close the match and finalize the 5-2 scoreline.
