GREEN BAY, Wis. - Green Bay finished its nonconference season with a 4-3 win over Gustavus Adolphus, who was the 10th ranked team in Division III. The Phoenix went 6-7 in nonconference play, and will now have a weekend off before beginning Horizon League play on Mar. 24-25 in Cleveland and Youngstown, Ohio.
After Gustavus took the doubles point, GB responded with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles by James Ling and Charlie Croxford, respectively. With the two teams tied at 2-2, Florian Kraenzler won at No. 1 singles to give his team the 3-2 lead. Gustavus answered at No. 4 singles, but Miles McDowall clinched the match with a 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 win at No. 5 singles.
Head coach Tim Dean on Gustavus match: "We snuck out with the win. We had several close matches and Gustavus is a very good and highly ranked Division 3 team. They came with their top games today and we had to battle. Miles came through mentally to clinch the win four us and get his first singles win on the season. It was a big first singles win that we had to have. We'll recover physically the next weekend off before jumping into the Horizon League season."
