12/17/2019 10:53:00 AM

DULUTH, Minn. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay Nordic Skiing team opened the 2019-20 season over the weekend at the Duluth CXC Cup in Duluth, Minnesota.  The men competed in the 10K freestyle, while the women participated in the 7.5K freestyle.

In the men's race, all five members of the team who competed finished in the top 30 out of the 98 skiers who finished the course.  Junior Shad Kraftson crossed the finish line first for the Phoenix with a time of 25:27.5.  Redshirt senior Quinn Duffy closely followed Krafton and crossed only one-second later with a time of 25:28.5.

Due to injury and illness on the women's side, only two members of the team raced over the weekend.  Nonetheless, in her collegiate debut for Green Bay, freshman Lara Ketterer finished fourth overall and earned a spot on the podium with a time of 22:09.4.  Redshirt junior Maria Schoening had a solid showing as well for the squad, taking 33rd overall with a time of 24:04.7.

"The first race of the season is always a little nerve wracking," stated head coach Jeremy Hecker.  "With this being the first time where we actually get to see the hard work in action, it gave me a sense of relief to see the team show up and perform well.  We are looking forward to carrying this momentum into next weekend."
