GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay softball team will kick off the 2019 season this weekend at the Total Control Sports Invitational in Rosemont, Illinois. The three-day invitational features games against Purdue Fort Wayne, DePaul, Western Illinois, and Evansville, with the first pitch being thrown at 9:00 a.m. on Friday against Purdue Fort Wayne.
This will be the first recorded matchup between the Phoenix and both Purdue Fort Wayne and Evansville, while the last time Green Bay saw DePaul was back in 2005. The Leathernecks are a more recent opponent, defeating the Phoenix in 2017 8-2 in the same invite.
Under the direction of third-year head coach Scott Wachholz, the Phoenix welcome eight newcomers to the roster for the 2019 campaign, adding to the team's depth. Green Bay will be led by four reliable upperclassmen this season: junior Bailey Schultz and seniors Marjorie Sloan, Jenna Smarzinski, and Emily Madeiros.
This weekend's tournament is the first of four for Green Bay this season, as the team will also compete in the Cougar Classic (Edwardsville, Ill.), Saluki Invitational (Carbondale, Ill.), and Skyhawk Hampton Inn Classic (Martin, Tenn.). The Phoenix will also face Kansas in a nonconference matchup prior to beginning Horizon League play in a doubleheader vs Wright State on March 29.
