Green Bay Opens Season With Thrilling Victory Over DePaul, 4-3

1/26/2020 3:37:00 PM

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) ---The Green Bay men's tennis team began their 2020 campaign with a home victory over DePaul earlier this afternoon by the final score of 4-3.

Senior Ivan Radomirovic sealed the deal for the Phoenix with his No. 6 singles victory in the final match of the day.  Radomirovic fell 5-7 in set number one but bounced back by taking the second set 6-4.  With everyone at the Green Bay Tennis Center watching the final set, the senior stayed calm and composed while winning the third set tiebreaker and clinching the win for the team.

Junior George Botha and sophomore Dipin Wadhwa won both of their singles matches as well for Green Bay.  Botha won No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-3 over Vito Tonejc, last season's BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, who just two days earlier defeated Wisconsin's No. 1 Lenard Soha, while Wadhwa took care of No. 3 singles 7-6, 6-2.

The doubles combo of Botha and Wadhwa was also victorious in No. 1 doubles by the final scoring of 7-5.  Freshman Satchel Benn and junior Lachlan Napier secured No. 2 doubles as well 6-3 for the Phoenix which earned the squad the doubles point.

Green Bay and DePaul are familiar with these close matches.  The Blue Demons won 4-3 by taking the final point of a three set singles match last season.

"I'm very happy for our guys in how they competed and ultimately taking the win," stated head coach Rob Oertel.  "Plenty of guys stepped up today but a huge win today by Ivan that clinched the victory in crunchtime."
