DELAND, Fla. – The Green Bay softball team started the Stetson Invite on a high note as Sara Ebner hit a walk-off single to score Paige Hanson in the ninth inning against LIU. Game two didn't go GB's way, however, as the Phoenix fell to Maryland 8-0.
GAME 1 | GREEN BAY 4, LIU 3
The Phoenix got on the scoreboard first, starting with a pair of runs on RBI singles from Hailey Heckenlaible and Paige Hanson to make it 2-0 Phoenix. LIU then went on to score runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game at two. Neither team was able to score in the seventh, and the game entered extra innings.
LIU scored first in extras, bringing a run across on a two-out triple from Alyssa Polemani to make it 3-2 LIU. Phoenix starter Paeton Kringel was able to minimize the damage with a strikeout.
GB got to work in the bottom of the ninth starting with a walk drawn from Hanson. The runner placed on second to start the inning, Anna Trimble, and Paige Hanson advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. From there, Sam Saloun hit a sac fly to score Trimble, and Ebner finished it off with a pinch-hit single down the left field line to score Hanson.
Kringel (1-2) started the game and got the win for GB. She went seven innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits, allowing two walks and striking out seven. Freshman Martha Miller also pitched well, going two shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking one, and striking out one.
At the plate, the Phoenix was led by sophomore Paige Hanson, who went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Kaylin Fahy also helped out at the plate for Green Bay, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate.

» Green Bay's runs came in bunches, with two coming across the plate in the third, and two more in the ninth.
» Green Bay went 3-for-7 (.429) with runners in scoring position.
» Green Bay pitchers limited LIU to just 2-for-11 (.182) with runners in scoring position.
» LIU was led offensively by Polemeni, who went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, and an RBI.
» Lindsey Cowans led the Sharks pitching staff, throwing 8.1 innings of four-run ball.
GAME 2 | MARYLAND 8, GREEN BAY 0
Although game two finished in five innings, the game was close throughout. The Terrapins got on the board with a pair of RBI singles in the first inning. That 2-0 lead stayed the same until Maryland's offense put up six runs in the fifth inning to make the score 8-0 and end the game.
Maryland pitcher Bri Godfrey was strong in the game, pitching five innings of scoreless ball. Ava Schill (1-1) started for the Phoenix and took the loss for GB.
In the batter's box, the Phoenix were led by sophomore Paige Hanson, who went 1-for-1 on the day with a walk. Heckenlaible went 1-for-2 in game two.

» Maryland outhit Green Bay 7-2.
COMING UP
GB has another doubleheader tomorrow against Maryland and Stetson. The games, originally slated to start at 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., have been moved to noon and 5:30 p.m. due to rain in the DeLand area.
