Green Bay Finishes Stetson Invite with 4-2 Win over LIU

DELAND, Fla. – The Green Bay softball team ended the Stetson Invitational on a high note, taking down LIU 4-2 on Sunday. The Phoenix went 2-3 on the weekend and moved to 3-7 on the year.

Martha Miller started the game in the circle and picked up the win for GB. The right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, on eight hits, and allowing two walks while striking out six. Paeton Kringel secured the save after getting out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the bottom of the seventh.

Offensively, the Phoenix was led by Bella Herman, who went 3-for-4 on the day with two RBI. Karissa Laabs was also 3-for-4 with an RBI. Hailey Heckenlaible drove in the other run for the Phoenix while also finishing 2-for-5 from the plate.

HOW IT HAPPENED

LIU got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a Gabby Padilla single down the left field line that gave them a 1-0 lead. Green Bay responded with a two-run inning in the fourth when Herman singled to right center to bring home two GB runs.

The Sharks then tied the ballgame at two in the fifth inning before the Phoenix grabbed the lead for good in the sixth inning with a Heckenlaible single to center that scored Herman. Laabs tacked on an insurance run for GB in the seventh with an RBI single that scored Lauren Porter.

As mentioned above, LIU threatened to extend or win the game in the bottom of the seventh when they loaded the bases with no outs.

However, Kringel got three straight outs after entering for Miller to strand the Sharks' runners.
