Phoenix Drops Pair Against Loyola Chicago and Southern Illinois

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Green Bay softball team dropped a pair of games on Sunday, falling to Loyola Chicago 8-2 and Southern Illinois 5-1. GB has wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule, opening up Horizon League play this Friday at Robert Morris.

GAME 1 | LOYOLA CHICAGO 8, GREEN BAY 2
There was a lot of scoring in the first inning of game one, starting with two runs in the top of the first from the Phoenix. Bella Herman singled to start the frame and was later brought home by a Sam Saloun homer, her first of the year.

Loyola Chicago would respond, however, taking the lead back with three runs in the bottom of the first thanks to a bases-clearing RBI triple from Teagan Sopczak.
GB's offense never got going again, registering one hit in the final six innings as the Ramblers tacked on five more runs and secured the 8-2 win.

Ava Schill got the start for the Phoenix and took the loss. Martha Miller was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going three shutout innings while allowing three hits, walking one, and striking out two.

Saloun led the way offensively for the Phoenix, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a home run and two RBI.

GAME NOTES
» Loyola outhit Green Bay, 10-3.
» Lauren Porter was the third Phoenix with a hit in game one.
» Loyola Chicago was led offensively by senior Teagan Sopczak, who went 3-for-3 with a triple and five RBI.
» Junior Andie Broniewicz led the Ramblers pitching staff, throwing 5.1 scoreless innings.

GAME 2 | SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 5, GREEN BAY 1
The Salukis started in the scoring against the Phoenix in game two, scoring four runs in the fourth and one more in the second to take an early 5-0 lead. Green Bay responded with a run in the sixth inning with a Sac Fly from Hailey Heckenlaible to score Herman. Unfortunately, the GB threat ended there, as SIU wrapped up the 5-1 win.

Green Bay got hits in game two from Herman, Messmann, Kendal Herschbach, and Giana Sanchez. Kelly Greene got the ball and went six innings for the Phoenix, taking the loss.

GAME NOTES
» SIU slightly outhit Green Bay, 7-4.
» Herschbach hit the lone extra-base hit, hitting a double in the top of the first.
» Hannah Hockerman led the Salukis pitching staff, throwing seven innings of one-run ball.
