CARBONDALE, Ill. – It was a tough opening day at the Coach B Classic for the Green Bay softball team, as the Phoenix fell to Loyola Chicago, 12-4, and Southern Illinois, 9-0.
GAME 1 | Loyola Chicago 12, Green Bay 4
Loyola started the scoring right away, putting up two runs in the first and one more in the second. The Phoenix responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the second. GB first got on the board with a first and third steal from Lauren Porter and Paige Hanson. Aidyn Messmann then singled home Porter to cut the Ramblers lead to 3-2.
However, Loyola would break it open in the top of the third, adding five runs to extend their lead to 8-2. That lead would hold the rest of the way, extending to 12-4 before the game went final.
Ava Schill (2-2) started and took the loss in the circle for Green Bay. Kelly Greene made a two-inning appearance as well.
Messman led the way offensively for the Phoenix, going 2-for-2 in the ballgame with a double and an RBI. Bella Herman and Kaylin Fahy chipped in at the plate as well. Fahy went 1-for-2 with an RBI while Herman went 1-for-3 with a triple.
GAME NOTES
» Loyola outhit Green Bay, 16-7.
» The Ramblers scored at least one run in every inning.
» Other Phoenix that finished with a hit in game one were Kendal Herschbach, Sam Saloun, and Paige Hanson.
» Loyola Chicago was led offensively by Sydney Barnett, who went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.
» Andie Broniewicz went all five innings for the Ramblers, allowing four runs.
GAME 2 | Southern Illinois 9, Green Bay 0
Green Bay struggled to get the offense going in game two, getting runners in scoring position just twice, going 0-for-2 in those situations.
The Salukis scored early and often, putting up one in the first, three in the third, three in the fifth, and two in the sixth. Martha Miller started in the circle for GB and took the loss.
GAME NOTES
» Southern Illinois outhit GB 8-2.
» Saloun and Hanson collected the two hits for the Phoenix.
» Southern Illinois hit three home runs against Green Bay pitching.
» Madi Eberle was lights out for the Salukis in the circle, pitching six shutout innings.
COMING UP
The Phoenix will have a chance to bounce back tomorrow starting with Loyola Chicago at 11 a.m., following by Southern Illinois again at 1:30 p.m.
