Phoenix Softball Drops Pair Against St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. – It was a battle on Wednesday afternoon, but the Green Bay softball team dropped a pair of games to the St. Thomas Tommies, 7-1 and 5-4.

GAME 1 | St. Thomas 7, Green Bay 1
The Phoenix was on the scoreboard first, scoring the lone run of the game in the top of the second inning on an RBI single from Sidney LaMotte to score Hailey Heckenlaible. The Tommies answered immediately, however, with a run in the bottom of the second.

The hosts took the lead in the fourth and continued to pour it on in the fifth and sixth, scoring seven unanswered runs to win 7-1.

Heckenlaible went 2-for-2 with a walk to lead the offense for Green Bay.

GAME NOTES
» Green Bay was outhit 7-5.
» LaMotte, Samantha Saloun, and Marissa Destache were the other Phoenix to finish with hits.
» Ava Schill started the game for GB, while Kelly Greene pitched in relief.

GAME 2 | St. Thomas 5, Green Bay 4
St. Thomas carried their game one momentum over to game two, scoring two runs in the first and two more in the third to take a 4-0 lead into the fourth inning. GB responded when Kaylin Fahy came across to score on a Saloun sac fly to make the game 4-1.

The Tommies added an insurance run in the bottom half of the fourth that would prove to be useful, as the Phoenix scored three more runs in the top of the fifth. GB scored with some small ball, with the first run coming on an advanced runner on a passed ball, the second on an RBI single from Fahy, and the third on a sacrifice fly from Sophia Gimla.

Unfortunately for Green Bay, that was the last time they scored and fell 5-4.

Martha Miller got the start for GB and was solid, going six innings, giving up nine hits, and surrendering five runs.

GAME NOTES
» St. Thomas outhit GB 9-3.
» Fahy led the Phoenix at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
