Phoenix Walks Off Mastodons in Game Two as Teams Split Doubleheader

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay softball team walked off the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons in game two, 11-10, after falling in game one, 9-0. GB and PFW will close out the series tomorrow at noon.

GAME 1 | Purdue Fort Wayne 9, Green Bay 0

The Green Bay bats never got going in game one, as the Phoenix was outhit by Purdue Fort Wayne 11-3. Green Bay had chances to score but went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

The Mastodons started the scoring in the first with a pair of runs. PFW would go on to score seven more unanswered runs and cruise to the 9-0 win. PFW homered twice and hit three doubles in the contest.

Alanah Jones and Alyson Quinlan combined to toss the shutout for Purdue Fort Wayne.

Kaylin Fahy had a standout game at the dish for the Phoenix, going 2-for-2 with a triple. Hailey Heckenlaible was the other Phoenix to register a hit.

GAME NOTES

» The Green Bay defense commit three errors in game one.

» Fahy led the Phoenix at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a triple.

» Purdue Fort Wayne was led offensively by Grace Hollopeter, who went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.

GAME 2 | Green Bay 11, Purdue Fort Wayne 10

The Phoenix offense exploded in the first inning of game two, putting up six runs their first time up to the plate. GB got offensive contributions from multiple hitters, with runs driven in by Samantha Saloun, Sophia Gimla, Lauren Porter, and Martha Miller.

The Mastodons rallied and responded immediately, putting up six runs of their own in the top of the second to tie the game up.

The offense wouldn't slow down there for Green Bay, however, as Porter collected her second and third RBIs with a single up the middle to give GB the 8-6 lead. Phoenix starting pitcher Martha Miller blanked the PFW offense in the third but surrendered four more in the fourth as the visitors took their first lead at 10-8.

Porter once again came up big for the Phoenix in the sixth, driving home a run to cut the lead to one with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Green Bay kept that one-run deficit in check in the top of the seventh and walked off the game with a pair in the bottom of the seventh. The Phoenix took advantage of Purdue Fort Wayne's defensive miscues, scoring both runs thanks to field errors.

Miller got the win for Green Bay in the circle. At the plate, the Phoenix was paced by Porter, who went 1-for-2 with four RBI. Gimla also chipped in for Green Bay, putting together three hits in five trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

» Eight different Phoenix had a hit in game two.

» Three different Phoenix finished with extra-base hits.

» The Phoenix out-hit the Mastodons at a 12-11 clip.
