Green Bay Splits Cleveland State Doubleheader

GREEN BAY, Wis. – It was a tale of two games for the Green Bay softball team on Saturday. The Phoenix run-ruled Cleveland State 8-0 in game one before the Vikings responded with a 6-0 win in game two. Cleveland State took two out of three games in the series.

GAME 1 | Green Bay 8, Cleveland State 0
The Phoenix scored in all five innings of game one, starting with one run in the bottom of the fifth. Sam Saloun drove in the run after an RBI triple scored Bella Herman. Herman would drive in her own run in the second with a single in the second.

The Phoenix extended its lead in the third with three more runs thanks to RBIs from Saloun and Lauren Porter and a fielding error on a Madyson Baker ball scored Paige Hanson to make it 5-0.
GB added two more in the fourth and one more in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game by a score of 8-0.

Ava Schill was dealing in the game, tossing a four-hit shutout to pick up her fourth win of the season. The right-hander walked just one batter in five innings of work.

GAME NOTES
» Green Bay was led offensively by Saloun, who went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a walk.
» Four Phoenix had multiple hits in the ballgame.
» The Phoenix out-hit the Vikings at a 10-4 clip.
» Green Bay went 6-for-14 (.429) with runners in scoring position.

GAME 2 | Cleveland State 6, Green Bay 0
 
Game two was the complete opposite of game one, with the Phoenix having trouble getting the offense going as CSU scored early and often.
 
The Vikings did all of their scoring in the first two innings, with one in the first and five in the second to take a 6-0 lead they would never relinquish. Kelly Greene started the game, with Martha Miller pitching well in relief. Going 5.1 innings while allowing just three hits and one run.
 
Melissa Holzopfel was lights out in the circle for the Vikings, pitching a complete game shutout. The right-hander struck out 10 while allowing just three hits.
 
GAME NOTES
» Kendal Herschbach, Paige Hanson, and Kaylin Fahy led the Phoenix going 1-for-3.
» CSU outhut GB 7-4.

UP NEXT
Green Bay will host St. Thomas on Wednesday, April 10 for a nonconference doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Following, they'll host Oakland for a three-game series starting on Saturday at noon.
