ROSEMONT, Ill. – Despite scoring first, the Green Bay softball team fell in their opening day matchup with the Butler Bulldogs, 7-1 at the Rosemont Dome in Rosemont, Ill.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a Bella Herman walk and Kendal Herschbach reaching on an error in the first inning, the Phoenix scored first thanks to an RBI single down the right field line from junior Jenna Redders. However, Butler scored three runs in response in the bottom of the first and then another run in the fourth and three in the fifth.
Genesis Eggart got the ball to start for the Phoenix, pitching four innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs. Butler's Gwen Baker pitched a complete game, allowing Green Bay five hits and one earned run to go with eight strikeouts.
GAME NOTES
» Butler outhit Green Bay 10-5.
» Herschbach was the lone Phoenix to reach base twice, finishing 1-for-2 with a walk.
» Redders was strong at the plate, going 1-for-3 with an RBI for GB.
» Butler was led offensively by sophomore Makena Alexander, who went 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI.
COMING UP
Green Bay will get two chances to bounce back tomorrow morning when they take on St. Thomas at 10 a.m. followed up by Western Illinois at 12:30 p.m.
