Game Recap: Softball |

Phoenix Advances to Day Three of #HLSB Championships with Win Over IU Indy

CLEVELAND, Ohio – It was a roller coaster of a day for the Green Bay softball team, as they fell in extra innings to Robert Morris before taking down IU Indy for the second time in as many days, 12-10.

Horizon League First-Teamer Genesis Eggart pitched all 15 innings the Phoenix played on Thursday and got the win in game two.

GAME 1 | Robert Morris 4, Green Bay 3
The Phoenix got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning thanks to an Aidyn Messmann double that brought home Emma Krueger.

RMU would respond with a run of their own in the third, and another in the fifth thanks to a pair of Courtney Poulich RBIs that gave the Colonials a 2-1 lead.

Jenna Redders came back in the next half inning and tied it up with one swing of the bat, homering her second time this year to tie the game at 2.

That 2-2 score held until the eighth inning when Brooke Schwall broke the tie with her third home run of the year, a solo shot to give GB a 3-2 lead. Unfortunately, RMU rallied in the bottom half of the eighth, scoring a pair of runs to earn the walk-off victory.

Eggart was strong in game one, going 7.2 innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on eight hits, allowing one walk and striking out seven. Madison DeVault got the win in the circle for the Colonials, striking out 11 in her eight innings of work.

GAME 2 | Green Bay 12, IU Indy 10
Coming off the heartbreaking defeat in game one, the Phoenix did a good job bouncing back and taking down IU Indy 12-10.

The Jaguars jumped ahead with a run in the first, but that lead didn't last long, as Redders hit her second home run of the day to give GB the lead. This one was a three-run homer over the left-field wall.

IU Indy came back in the bottom half of the third and scored two runs to tie the game at 3-3 heading into the fourth.

The Phoenix bats stayed hot in the fourth inning, with Bella Herman driving home a run before a two-run, pinch-hit home run from Sidney LaMotte gave Green Bay a 6-3 lead. The Phoenix ballooned that lead to seven with four more runs in the fifth inning. Schwall started the scoring with a two-run homer, her second of the day before GB got RBI hits from Messmann and Krueger.

Down 10-3, the Jaguars would not go away. The No. 3 seed scored five unanswered runs over the course of the fifth and sixth innings to make it a 10-8 game heading into the seventh.
GB was able to create some separation again in the top of the seventh thanks to a Paige Hanson homer and a Grace Kahr RBI. The Jags threatened a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, bringing the game to 12-10 before Eggart forced Paige McPhearson to ground out to shortstop for the third out of the inning.
