Phoenix Falls to Valparaiso and DePaul on Final Day in Rosemont

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Green Bay softball team fell in its final two games in Rosemont, 6-0 to Valpo and 8-3 to DePaul.
 
GAME 1 | Valparaiso 6, Green Bay 0
Green Bay and Valpo were locked into a scoreless pitcher's duel through four and a half innings. In the bottom of the fifth, the Beacons put up six runs, which would be all the runs scored in the game.
 
Morgan Kostecka (0-1) started and took the loss in the circle for Green Bay.
 
In the batter's box, the Phoenix was led by Paige Guse, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a double and a walk. Sidney Lamotte was the other Phoenix with an extra-base hit, going 1-for-3 with a double.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Green Bay struggled with runners in scoring position, going a total of 1-for-7. The Phoenix last got a runner on third in the seventh, when Gracie Anderson made it 60 feet away from scoring with two outs.
 
Green Bay and Valpo both finished the game with six hits apiece. The Beacons Sydney McDermott and Ava Goodman combined for the shutout.
 
GAME NOTES
» Green Bay pitchers faced 33 Valparaiso hitters in the game, allowing seven ground balls and seven fly balls while striking out four.
» Kostecka pitched four shutout innings before yielding six runs in the fifth.
» Valparaiso was led offensively by Kim Rodas, who went 1-for-1 with a double and an RBI.
» McDermott led the Beacons' pitching staff, throwing five shutout innings.
 
GAME 2 | DePaul 8, Green Bay 3
Green Bay got a strong performance from Brooke Schwall, who recorded two extra base hits in an 8-3 loss to the DePaul Blue Demons on Sunday.
 
Jasmyn Trigueros (0-2) started and took the loss in the circle for Green Bay.
 
Schwall's two extra-base hits and two RBIs were the highlight of the Phoenix offense. Sidney LaMotte had the team's third RBI.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Phoenix put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Schwall put Green Bay on the board with a leadoff home run off DePaul's Hannah Messer.
 
The Blue Demons responded with a run of their own in the second before adding three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. The Phoenix came back in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs thanks to a run coming across on a DePaul error and an RBI double from Schwall to make it 4-3. DePaul wouldn't let it stay that close, however, bringing in two runs in the bottom halves of the fifth and sixth innings to take the 8-3 lead, which would eventually become the final score.
 
GAME NOTES
» DePaul outhit Green Bay 15-5.
» Green Bay pitchers faced 37 DePaul hitters in the game, allowing 10 ground balls and three fly balls while striking out four.
» The Phoenix drew four walks from DePaul pitching.
» DePaul was led offensively by Bibianna Rodriguez, who went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.
» Messer led the Blue Demons' pitching staff, throwing five innings of three-run ball.

The Phoenix will have a week off before going to the Velvet Milkman Classic hosted by Murray State from Feb. 19-21.
