DETROIT, Mich – The Green Bay softball team dropped its series opener to Detroit Mercy, losing 12-7 Thursday afternoon.
Paeton Kringel started for Green Bay (10-23, 4-6), going 2.1 innings, giving up five runs on five hits, while also recording three strikeouts. Jasmyn Trigueros took the loss for the Phoenix (4-9), throwing one inning, giving up five runs, three earned on four hits.
Gracie Anderson led the Phoenix at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs. Sara Ebner went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, and three other Phoenix players had two-hit days in Thursday's loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Anderson put the Phoenix on top 1-0 after a solo homerun in the top of the first inning. Detroit Mercy scored two runs in the bottom of the inning on a lone hit to take a 2-1 lead going into the second.
Green Bay tied the game at two on an RBI single from Jenna Redders in the second inning and took the lead in the third inning on Anderson's second home run of the game. The Titans responded with three runs of their own to take a 5-3 lead in the third inning.
Ebner hit a two RBI single and tied the game up at five in the top of the fourth, before Anderson picked up her third RBI of the game to give a 6-5 lead back to the Phoenix.
Detroit Mercy mounted a comeback, scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and one more in the fifth to take an 11-6 lead. Green Bay scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Bella Herman to cut the lead to 11-7; however, the Phoenix was unable to get any closer, as Detroit Mercy added one run to their tally on the way to a 12-7 final.
GAME NOTES
» Every Phoenix starter reached base safely in the loss.
» Green Bay's highest scoring inning was the fourth, when it pushed three runs across.
» Five Green Bay hitters had multiple base knocks in the ballgame.
» The Phoenix out-hit the Titans at a 14-13 clip.
» Green Bay went 5-for-12 (.417) with runners in scoring position.
» Detroit Mercy was led offensively by Trinity Fessler, who went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs.
UP NEXT
Green Bay will face Detroit Mercy in a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to close out the weekend series.
