MILWAUKEE,
Wis. - Green Bay (6-12, 3-4) picked up an important Horizon League victory on
Friday night, edging Milwaukee (5-13, 2-5) at the Paley Tennis Center to clinch
a berth in the six-team Horizon League Championships March 23-25 in
Indianapolis.
The Phoenix
battled from behind after dropping the doubles point in heartbreaking fashion.
All three doubles matches went to tiebreakers, with Green Bay only grabbing a
win at the top spot where Emily Lawent (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Lauryn Grimando
(Oak Brook, Ill.) won 9-8 (5).
Both players
continued their strong play by winning their singles matches. Lawent came back
from a one-set hole to defeat Kari Kastenholz 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles,
while Grimando cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 4.
The Phoenix
dominated play at the bottom of the order, as the squad swept the No. 4-6
positions to earn the victory. All three contests were of the straight-set
variety.
At No. 5,
Laura Bartingale (Green Bay, Wis.) nailed down a 6-4, 6-4 victory, while
Rebecca Nelson notched a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the six line.
