HOUGHTON, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's and women's Nordic skiing teams
competed at the NCAA Central Region Championships on Saturday at the Michigan
Tech Ski Trails in Houghton, Mich. Phoenix senior Carolyn Freeman (Ely, Minn.) had another impressive outing, cruising to a
first-place finish in the women's classical event and a third-place finish in
the freestyle race.
After
poor weather conditions postponed Friday's races, the Phoenix skiers were
forced to compete twice on Saturday. Despite the tough circumstances, Freeman
was still able to turn in a pair of remarkable races just a few hours apart.
The
Green Bay standout finished 24 seconds ahead of second place in the 10K classic
event, crossing the line in 32:59.3 for her seventh individual win of the year.
Earlier in the day Freeman finished the 5K freestyle race in 14:57.7, which was
good for third.
Freshman
Kailey Mucha (Soldotna, Alaska) was
Green Bay's second finisher in both races on Saturday. In the freestyle, the
newcomer placed 29th in 16:32.0 and then finished 20th in the classic with a
time of 35:50.6.
Senior
Nick Maki (Aurora, Minn.) was Green
Bay's top finisher on the men's side in the 10K freestyle event, finishing in
26th place (28:25.1). Fellow senior Kyle Fredrickson (Hayward, Wis.) led the Phoenix in the 10K classic race,
placing 28th with a time of 30:54.7.
The
Green Bay Nordic skiers must now await the final tally of points to find out
who qualifies for a trip to the NCAA Championships, held March 9-11 in Stowe,
Vt.
