MILWAUKEE (GreenBayPhoenix.com)
- The Green Bay women's tennis team (0-6, 0-1 Horizon League) began
conference play Friday night, dropping a 6-1 result to Milwaukee
(5-3, 1-0 Horizon League) at LeClub.
The Panthers won the doubles point to start the match and then took five of the six singles contests to secure the victory.
"We are continuing to work on more aggressive footwork at the net to reduce unforced errors," Phoenix head coach
Sara Schubring said. "In singles, Milwaukee capitalized on early unforced errors and kept the momentum in most of the matches."
Picking up the lone point for the Phoenix was
Maria Anderson (Marshfield, Wis.), who earned a win at
No. 4 singles. The junior dropped the first set 6-1 to Milwaukee's Kelly
Fritz, but rallied back to take sets two and three to bring home the
1-6, 6-1, 10-7 victory.
"Anderson rebounded nicely from the first set loss," Schubring said. "She slugged her way to a victory."
Anderson also teamed up with fellow junior
Rebecca Nelson (Brookfield, Wis.) to win in doubles
action. The tandem fought for a close, 8-6 win over the Panthers' pair
of Chelsea Bailey and Beth Ganser at the No. 2 spot.
Green Bay has a quick turnaround, traveling to Fort Wayne, Ind., to take on IPFW on Saturday at 7 p.m.
